What is Portrait painting?

Share & Comment
Portrait Painting will take many years to master; it cannot be learned overnight. And this is difficult for those of us who are in the habit of striking a computer key on our keyboard and see instant answers on the computer screen.
Just as a good wine or a steak needs to be aged, likewise our skills need constant practice until we are refined to produce masterpieces as good as or better than famous portrait artists.
In the meantime, I do admit to side tracking to relieve my frustrations. You probably do the same. This time I decided to paint clown faces.
It seemed to be a relaxing getaway to paint a simpler face. If you have done this you probably discovered that the trademark or logo of the clown was rather easy to sketch and paint.
But, that word but, gets you every time. Regardless of whether it is the face of a human or the face of a clown that personality or that essence which makes that face unique haunts you.
The human face reflects the human soul of an individual. Painting the shell of your model is not enough. The human soul needs to be captured to bring life to the shell.
The personality of the inward clown needs to be brought forward in the face of the clown. The clown may have a happy face; however, the human being behind the mask may not be happy.
It is the eyes. I have noted that if the essence of the individual is not captured with the eyes then there is no life in the clown.
The trademark of the clown may be the broad red smile painted on its face, however, as you look into the eyes behind the painted mask therein lays the truth.
Portrait painting is more than painting what you see. The model may want to be portrayed in another manner. As an example, the artist is inclined to paint the portrait of a beautiful woman, sexually and provocatively. However, the model is a physician and wishes her portrait to reflect a professionally respected and honored physician.
When you are able to capture the real person behind the smiling clown then you will reveal an interesting personality which will come to life on the canvas.
Learning to capture the personality behind the mask has been a wonderful lesson to help with the true portrait of a person. The shell which you see or the shell which the person wants you to see is the mask; the eyes will help dictate to you the essence or that deeper quality of the individual which needs to be captured on canvas.
Behind the smiling clown face was a pensive, quiet individual. If the portrait artist can capture this quiet meditative state then the face of the smiling clown will appear loving, affectionate, and smiling. The smile of pleasure is truly worn by the viewer.
